Results with co-operation
As a part of Waterpraxis project the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for North Ostrobothnia has started a restoration project in rivers discharging to the Liminganlahti Bay.
The drainage area of the River Temmesjoki covers almost totally Liminka and Tyrnävä municipalities. Tributaries the River Tyrnävänjoki and the River Ängeslevänjoki discharge to the River Temmesjoki near the River mouth. The River Liminganjoki is connected to the River Temmesjoki with a channel. Water quality is strongly affected by great amount of peatland especially in upper parts of the area.
The River Temmesjoki and tributaries are not in good ecological state: pH is occasionally very low due to drainage in acid sulphate soils and high nutrient concentrations cause eutrophication. Also eroding riverbanks and low water level in summer are harmful for ecological state and recreational use. Suspended solids accumulate in river pools, delta and the Liminganlahti Bay. The Liminganlahti Bay is internationally significant nature conservation area. Its flood meadows are important resting areas for migrating birds.
Improving the ecological state of the River Temmesjoki and tributaries is a demanding task where early start and effective co-operation is essential.
